Tucked along a long country road in Jarretsville, Maryland is Ladew Topiary Gardens and Estate.

Considered one of the five top gardens in North America, Ladew Topiary Gardens is a hidden eden easily accessed from Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Their new butterfly house is a wonderful addition to an already spectacular garden. The second season for the butterfly house, this one is unique than most. Set along a beautiful natural meadow designed to especially attract butterflies native to Maryland, Ladew’s butterfly house includes local beauties.

Twice weekly, volunteers visit the meadow with nets in their hands, catching butterflies to include in the house. Within the house are a wide variety of host plants to support native butterflies. Readily accepting their new habitat, these butterflies quickly set to task in laying eggs for the next generation.

  1. I love butterfly gardens and tend to look for them where ever I travel.
How did you do in the contest? I did vote daily. I was hoping! 😄

    • I’ve been so crazy busy that I haven’t been able to give an update on the contest Ilex.

Was sitting on the last day with my teenage granddaughter lamenting that I wasn’t going to get into the calendar. She responds by saying “I just texted 30 of my friends to vote for you.”

That got me on a roll and I call in all the troops. I went from 14th place to 10th place within 6 hours ! So Woo Hoo ! I’m in.

This butterfly house was different as they went and caught them just outside. All the others I’ve been do hatch them, and exotics at that.
