The enlisted men had it rough, they had to carry everything themselves, and many chose to discard everything but the bare necessities to save weight while marching endless miles. The ranking officers had it better, some even brought their wives and families with them. At least that’s what I’ve read. It’s hard to reenact marching 15 miles in the rain, only to set up camp in the mud someplace, sounds like some of my camping adventures. 😉
You’re absolutely right Jerry. There was a wide range of tent accommodations the depended on the rank of the person. I had the opportunity to speak with an enlisted man and will post a photo today with his small ‘shelter.’ It was amazing hardship that these men went through. Many of the enlisted Confederates marched without shoes. Hard to imagine.

So warm though 🙂 makes me think of how my grandma still really treasures a piece of chocolate because of how it was back in the war.
