Lunch in Farragut Square

“Damn the Torpedoes ! Full speed ahead!”

David G. Farragut

Standing high and proud in a rare green space in the center of the bustling streets of Washington D.C. stands a statue of David G. Farragut. A Union Admiral in the American Civil War immortalized by his battle cry during the Battle of Mobile Bay. He began his illustrious naval career at the young age of 12 during the War of 1812 as a Prize Master. Tasked with bringing safely home a captured ship, this brave young lad was destined for greatness.

I remember Farragut Square well from earlier years when I worked at a travel agency at 16th and K streets. It was a much quieter park then, and during lunch I would enjoy sitting on the bench watching the people walk by. I would play a game of “Guess what they do?” and frequently I thought I was right.

Now, Farragut Square is home to a new trend – Food Trucks !

All lined up in a row on both the east and west sides of the park are these food trucks that bring the world’s cuisine to the square. With ethnic music playing that matched the food being served, the enticing scents and sounds make it hard to choose.

One side of the park seems more geared to Latin American food, while the other trends to Middle Eastern food.

These are gourmet restaurants on wheels. Where else can you go to have such a wide variety of choices for lunch? When I saw this truck, I was hoping they were really selling Mojo. After all, we could all use more Mojo.

I truly didn’t know where to start as all the food trucks were tempting me. That is..until I saw the Sweet Bites Desserts Cupcake Truck! I would have shared a photo of the delectable carrot cupcake with Maple syrup and cream cheese icing, but before I could think, it was inhaled. Little did I know when eating this incredible cupcake that Sweet Bites Desserts have been written up in Southern Living and Washingtonian magazines.

  1. Wonderful photos! Food trucks have taken over the cities! It is so exciting to see them on the corners with everyone gathered around, talking to each other!! A great way to try different cuisines and meet new people!

  2. I could never get myself to order from a food truck even in NYC or New Orleans where the food selection was epic. Not sure why, maybe too many choices or maybe the smell of grease was overwhelming. You did capture the pageantry of the line of trucks though. Kinda like the trucks are on the runway of fashion.

    • I had the same thoughts as well. But let me tell you, these are high quality food providers. You would never have known you weren’t being served in a brick and mortar institution. Tons of competition, and thus higher quality.
Yes, one row was briliiant colors.

    • I had never seen such a congregation of food trucks either Leanne. It really intriqued me, especially when I realized the high caliber of the food they serve. it’s a wonderful place for Washingtonians to meet and mingle.

  3. What a great idea! I haven’t been to London for a while but hope it’s catching on there. I particularly like the idea of standing around and sharing food with and meeting other people at the same time. Traditional restaurants can be pretty isolating here, everyone at their own table, so this could be an exciting trend!! xx

    • And the best part is that you can pick what you want to eat and no one has to eat it if they don’t like it. 🙂 I believe it is a fast growing trend as the overhead is far less than a brick & mortar restaurant.

  4. Love the pictures! Wow, those food trucks are really something else. They are creatively decorated. I really love the sweet bites truck!!
