It was to be a short visit to Costa Rica and our ultimate destination was to be the Selva Verde Lodge in Sarapiqui. But it was the mountains that were calling me. With their cloud forests and cool evening temperatures, the romance of Costa Rica’s tropical mountains were not to be missed.
One summer as a teenager I lived in Costa Rica and remember visiting Poas Volcano. Upon arrival, the clouds had moved in and we could barely see our hands in front of our faces. But in spite of the fog, some boys were playing soccer in the mist. We could hear their laughter and voices but never saw them.
I wanted to return to Poas Volcano for a visit as an adult and in searching I discovered the Poas Volcano Lodge. Hidden behind a dairy farm, this property has been owned by Michael Cannon, a UK resident, for over 40 years. It was his dream to own a piece of paradise and raised his children in Costa Rica.
In 2009, the “Cinchona” earthquake completely destroyed the property but luckily no one was injured. Michael had to completely recreate his mountain lodge to its beautifully appointed lodge that it is today. A smaller property, it provides an intimacy that is perfect for the romantic getaway. Because it is nestled on top of a hill surrounded by agricultural fields, the birds and wildlife have found the property their haven.
The birds are plentiful and several trails take you through primary forests. In the gardens there is a garden room with mud boots for stomping in the mud.
Within the main building a reading and game room is available with wi-fi and overlooks a bird feeding station. The restaurant provides the included breakfast and dinner was truly a delight.
The Poas Volcano Lodge is a beautiful property that is well cared for and is a home away from home. Michael Conner made his guests feel welcomed and part of the family. Secluded, but close to popular tourist attractions including Poas Volcano and the La Paz waterfall gardens, this oasis is a perfect place to stay.

I must say, I do like the looks of that Green House – how delightful! 🙂
Me too Joanne. Makes me want one for myself. Simple yet perfect.
How absolutely DIVINE to have such a sanctuary – let the dreams begin! 🙂
What an amazingly beautiful part of the world. I’m going to have add this to my “must see” list.
You absolutely should to go Costa Rica Charlie. It’s an amazing country, wonderful food, happy people, incredible scenery and the wildlife outstanding. What’s more to say?
It sounds like a great place and I LOVE that frog jumping over the cow. Now, I wonder, did the cow jump over the moon?
That is funny ! Now can you imagine a Brit owning this place? Makes you dream a little doesn’t it?
Oh yes, I can! They are the adventurous kind!
Absolutely gorgeous! Looks so peaceful 🙂
This lodge was a true haven. I would stay there again if I have the chance.
Is Michael Cannon still involved? Loved that man! He was amazing.
Yes he is, and we had the opportunity to meet him. A true gentleman.
