Lighting the way for all that travel through the Chesapeake Bay towards Baltimore stand the Baltimore Harbor Light house. Built in 1908, the lighthouse sits at the mouth of the Magothy River. The last lighthouse to be built on the Chesapeake Bay, at the time of building, it was world’s tallest caisson style light.
In 1964, the Baltimore Harbor Light became the only lighthouse in the United States that relied on nuclear energy for power. But that was short-lived and the lighthouse is now functional on solar power.
Sold to a private party at auction in June, 2006 for the sum of $260,000. Can you imagine? This could be your home, and the daily commute would be done by boat.

A great bit of history and photos that is quite lovely.
it is my pleasure to share this with you Charlie. Are you near the water at all?
I love lighthouses, I should have been born 150 years ago, I’d make the perfect light keeper.
Oh you totally would ! This is the perfect house for you. You would have loved my birding trip yesterday. So many shore birds!!
oh wow, that lighthouse looks gorgeous. it’s such a pity we don’t have any of them here in vienna š i really like lighthouses!
I love lighthouses too. There are several here in the Chesapeake Bay and I really should make it a point to go and visit them.
Hi Emily
I love lighthouses too! All those beacons of hope leading the sailors home! I see one flashing every night from my window. Lovely photographs and commentary as ever.

That would be a wonderful place to be. Beautiful picture.
I think I would love it too, except the winter perhaps. Thanks Fatima!
LOVED IT!!! We love our Fishermen and the Lighthouses that keep them safe as they head in!
They work so hard and take so many risks so that we can enjoy the treasures from the sea. I agree, they need to be kept safe.
š
I can definitely imagine living in a lighthouse. $260K? What a steal!
Gorgeous pictures.
The bizarre thing is that the U.S. auctioned off all of the lighthouses that year. They still have rights to use the lighthouse for lighting the waterways. I could truly enjoy this as a getaway place.
Home? Does it come with elevator?
Ummm…probably not. Lots of stairs.
Cool lighthouse. Looks like the birds spend a lot of time on it. š
Indeed they do. Wouldn’t you?
Reblogged this on MidAtlantic States Association.
