Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park is a geological wonder.
I Choose the Mountain
Howard Simon
The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer
The massive mountain makes its move
Beckoning me to ascend
A much more difficult path
To get up the slippery bend
I cannot choose both
I have a choice to make
I must be wise
This will determine my fate
I choose, I choose the mountain
With all its stress and strain
Because only by climbing
Can I rise above the plane
I choose the mountain
And I will never stop climbing
I choose the mountain
And I shall forever be ascending

With granite boulders bigger than life, the mountain began nearly 1 billion years ago. The coarse-grained igneous rock is abundant with white feldspar and blue quartz. Fascinating geologists with its natural staircases, and mafic dikes, the mountain is certainly one of a kind.

The way the boulder sits like that, Up the stairs, really makes one wonder π
Isn’t that boulder amazing? When I saw it 3 years ago, I wondered if it might shift as there is just one small area sitting on the right side. Amazingly, it has moved a millimeter.
oh wow so does that mean that one day it’ll shift? O.o
You would think it would. But how long, who knows.
I just hope nobody’s near when that happens and if it does happen that someone will catch it on film π
Or someone is below it when it happens. π
What a stunning place to be, I can feel the peace that it sends out, the vibration of calmness, joy & that I am at one
Dear Mystical writer, your comment truly brought such warmth to my heart. Thank you so much for your wonderful response to this post, and I am so happy that I was able to share my experience with you.
The 2 B&W shots really stole it for me. The light at the end of the tunnel in the first and the surreal rock suspension in the second.
Artistic and beautiful.
You are so kind Ruby. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome π
I love those photos, especially the one with the ‘hatillo’ (sack on the stick, sorry don’t know the English name for it): how rustic! π
Isn’t that Hatillo cool? It was a young girl that was carrying that hobo style suitcase. Had to take a picture of it. π
I like the simplicity of it. π
