Today was a day filled with mundane tasks. Wrapping up mid-afternoon, a quick look outside caused these two Downy Woodpeckers to catch my eye.
For once I had my camera set up for birding as earlier in the morning I was hoping to capture a Winter Wren. With no luck of course. These downy’s were flying in and around the older trees for at least 20 minutes. I was able to enjoy them and their dance in the air. Such a beautiful sight.

We’re losing social skills, the human interaction skills, how to read a person’s mood, to read their body language, how to be patient until the moment is right to make or press a point. Too much exclusive use of electronic information dehumanises what is a very, very important part of community life and living together.

Downy Woodpeckers in stereo–I love the shots (and the title).
Thank you so much Mike ! I knew there was a family in my yard this year, but this is the first time I’ve seen the kids.
Incredible! even admist the branches their pattern is so beautiful! I truly love the action photograph! They look either like they are having a lovers quarrel, or a very frantic mating dance!
Thank you so much ! I believe these are two males because of the red on their heads. I think it was more of a territorial, sibling rivalry thing. It was so fun to watch.
I can imagine! I love watching the birds at our feeders!
Love those Downy Woodpeckers, Emily!!!
Thank you so much Barb ! Have a wonderful Sunday.
That’s a fantastic collection of shots, especially the last one! They look serious about the fight, although it was probably nothing.
Simply sibling rivalry. It was so fun to watch.
I can read you like a blog
