Morse code? Music box?
Indeed, it is a music box. Hand cranked and the paper cut outs are notes.
It’s really quite extraordinary, isn’t it how long this ‘new’ technology stayed on in our everyday life, sending telegrams around the world until recently, and telexes on offices until well into the 80s – but it was its insertion into the piano – purely for pleasure – which always made me smile, because it seemed to reflect the dream of so many of us to be able to make music, even if we lacked the skill!
I remember the telex days. I used to send them all the time overseas when I was a travel agent in the 1980’s. And then the fax was the next best way to communicate without a long distance phone call. Now it’s instantaneous! Imagine ! Facetime !!
This is a stand alone music box, although paper music rolls were well used in pianos.
a wind up music box?
You’re awesome ! You knew exactly what it is!
I have forgotten the exact name for them, must be old age creeping in. My parents had some of them, even though we didn’t have a player piano.
This is called a Mandolina Organette. and was made in the late 1880’s in New York by the Mechanical Orguinette company.
I had no idea what it was as it was hiding in a closet since I moved in with hubby. Thought it was a cash register !
This is the beginning of the player piano. Where did you see this wonderful example!!! And the quote is perfect! How exciting…
Well…it’s been hiding in a closet gathering dust for at least 12 years. All this time I thought it was a cash register. Pulled it out for a photo op, and was totally surprised. It’s still in working order too!
They made things to last back then! My stove is not cooperating and I just bought it!!!
“Play it again, Sam”… ‘lol’
The good old days… 🙂 😉
Now Drake..I know you’re not that old !
No I’m not taht old… ‘hahaha’
– but I like many of the old Bogart movies… 😉
A barrel organ. A Hurdy-gurdy. My sister had one for Christmas many years ago that played ‘Lara’s Theme’ from the film Dr Zhivago. I loved it.
Not quite, but close. A Hurdy Gurdy is an actual music instrument, while this is a music player. The paper’s holes creates notes.
I love it! I am unsure what it is but I know it is vintage. I had a little laugh because underneath your quote you have your camera listed, iPad2. We have come a long way from the picture to now! Wonderful post and perfect quote 🙂
Isn’t that the truth ! this is the first time I took a photo with the iPad. It’s ok, but the iPhone 4S does a much better job. This came from the late 1800’s. Would you believe that?
Another great antique! How wonderful to have such surprises in the closet!
I know ! Spoke with hubby today, said he bought it and it went straight into the closet. Sat there ever since. It works too!
I love the sound of a music box. They’re so hard to find anymore.
I do too, this really has a unique sound. I had never seen one before.
