Shunning modern conveniences, the Amish are able to move around the countryside while being environmentally friendly. Whether it is walking from the shoe store
Or biking home from work
The Amish are perfectly accustomed to being gas independent.
Using Mule teams to drive heavy farm equipment, huge fields are worked without having to spew carbon dioxide into the air.
Fertilizing their fields with black slush – which I Β have no idea what it consists of –
Rain or shine, they work their fields.
And their car? A horse drawn carriage with Standard bred horses which are worked hard along the roadways.
The black carriages are for the Amish, the gray for the Mennonites.
It’s no wonder the Amish seem so fit, between walking, biking and tacking up carriages they use their own energy for transportation. What can you do to find alternative ways for transportation? Can you walk or bike to any of your destinations? Imagine the double benefit! Not only will you help get more energy independent, you can get in better shape.
Let’s all take a walk today.

I love these photos and your topic! So different.
Thank you so very much and I appreciate you stopping by and subscribing. Look forward to sharing more with you.
Wonderful series of photos Bella, I really eenjoyed these! I did take a walk this morning. π
So proud of you Phil ! I went on a birding walk this morning thinking there would be droves of birds preparing for the storm, but all was quiet. Glad you liked this post, Amish country does fascinate me.
Very very interesting post and wonderful shots – by the way I have both a car and a bike…. ‘hahaha’
Funny Drake..I have a car, bike, canoe, hiking shoes and a horse. Does that help?
Environmental friendly is good, very good. But the religion is very strict among the amish. Nice photos, Emily.
It is so true Bente, they are quite unforgiving. I remember seeing a show where an Amish lady had her hair colored and they kicked her out of the church for it. Thanks for your kind words on the pics.
Beautiful photos. π π
Can you imagine running around on an Amish Farm Maggie? So many wonderful things to chase.
Great photos and thoughts, Bella. π
Truly, you are too kind.
LOvely photos…I do try and walk to the supermarket down the road and markets on a wednesday..something nice about carrying groceries back home!!
You are awesome Lisa ! Wish I lived in an area where I didn’t have to depend on a car for transportation. I would certainly find alternate ways to move around.
Interesting piece and lovely photos. I’m atoning for my sins of driving a range rover in Sudan and I now only cycle except for the odd taxi to evening events when dressed up. It is such a shame that everyone in Hanoi is obsessed my motorcycles as it is such a flat and relatively small city that most places can be reached within 25minutes – It would have been interesting to be here 25 years ago when it was all just bicycles and trams. Maybe one day it will be forced to change due to congestion and pollution!
Hee… LOVE the title! Such a great series. Babies! π
Thought provoking Bella. And amazing photos!
