High up in the Andes Mountains, near the village of Maras and the unique Salineras is a strange and seemingly out-of-this-world circular terraces known as Moray.
Built by the Incas over 500 years ago, there are several concentric circular terraces dug deep into the earth. Looking at the primary circular terrace, it is similar to the T.A.R.D.I.S. from Doctor Who. Looking at it, it appears to be rather small, but once you start walking into the pit, it seems larger than life.
These terraces provide unique micro climates based on the terrace level and location, providing the Incas an Agricultural experimentation station. Here they were able to experiment with a variety of crops and farming techniques to determine the best suited plants for a variety of altitudes and weather conditions.
Heading to the bottom of Moray, one could feel the temperature rise. Temperature differences from the top to the bottom can vary by 20 degrees. We reached the bottom and spent some time laying in the grass taking in the spirit and energy within Moray. Our guide David pulled out his Pan flute and played a beautiful song, creating a backdrop to the magical Moray spirit.
I was reluctant to leave. For some reason the bottom of Moray was a very peaceful place. Or perhaps I knew it was a long way back up. Either way, it was time to go, and when we started our steep climb back out of Moray, a group began a Shaman ritual.
I found Moray to be quite magical and mysterious. The circular terraces spoke to me in a different way than many terraced areas at other Inca ruins. There is something about being within a circle. It gives you a sense of completeness. There is no beginning and no end, but rather a unity that is continuous.
We had reached Moray by private car and driver, which is the easiest way to reach Moray. Taxis are also willing to take you to Moray for a visit.
Leaving Moray, I realized that this was to be the beginning of many steep steps and climbs on my journey in Peru. This most certainly is a “before” the Inca Trail photo. Happy Trails!

Really beautiful. Reminds me of the rice terraces in Ifugao! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Now that’s a place I’ve never heard of. What country is that in?
It’s in the Philippines. Try to visit the place if you can. It’s also stunning.
Very very impressive work of the Incas, so amazing what they have been able to accomplish – without any architectural school… 😉
Really great shots – of course you have to try the stone stairs too,.. ‘big smile’.
But of course I did ! This really is an engineering marvel. Thanks Drake and Happy Day!
Very cool!
A unity that is continuous – that just sums it all up perfectly. Love it. 🙂

Thanks Cat!
