The Cats at Hemmingway’s Home – Key West, Florida

Hemmingway's Home - Key West, Florida

The historical and beautiful tropical island home of Ernest Hemmingway in Key West is home to some very special cats.

These six-toed cats are famous world wide for their uniqueness and rarity in the cat world. With over 40 cats on the premises, this truly is a cat heaven. The home and the museum staff are there to serve and care for these felines. Some of the cats are direct descendants of the original six-toed cat owned by Ernest Hemmingway, Snowball, who had been given to him by a sea captain.

Stepping into the walled garden of the home is like stepping into an oasis that takes you away to a previous time full of romanticism and heroism. There is nothing like walking around a place that has a spirit of times past, and kitties galore.

Looking around for the cats is like looking for Easter Eggs. Some were bold and sat on top of the cash register in the gift shop, while others hide in the tropical plantings in the garden.

I could have spent all day just on the hunt for these six-toed cats, and perhaps even try to slip one into my travel bag. I hope that my foot prints will take me back again to visit these lovely felines.

  1. Hi, somehow on my computer your photos look skewed/squished as if they went from wide screen to narrow… I do have a regular, not wide aspect monitor.

  2. I so enjoyed this blog and am looking forward to your next post. Your captions give one the feeling of being there with you!
