Valle de la Luna is a natural and unique feature that is unexpected so close to the people packed hustle and bustle of La Paz. Rumored to have been named Moon Valley by astronaut Neil Armstrong this fact has been hard to prove.
The rock formations in the valley on one side resemble what one would think the landscape on the moon would look like. On the other, a mountain brightly colored with multiple minerals in the stonescape.
Overlooking the Moon Valley and La Paz is La Muela del Diablo or “The Devil’s Tooth.” An iconic feature that is seen more often than the snow-capped glacier topped Illimani Mountain, La Meula del Diablo is a factured Volcanic neck from an extinct volcano.
To get to our lesser known access to the Valle de la Luna, we left the Zona Sur area of Calacoto and took the main road that passed by the typical Moon Valley park trails and drove through the small town of Mallasa. Taking a road that only the locals knew, we reached the edge of the valley with a winding road that led down to a cooperative of flower farmers.
It was a quiet place, offering us solitude with this special landscape. Clouds enveloped The Devil’s Tooth and began to dissolve, allowing us to appreciate its fractured structure.
As we had the place to ourselves, it was the perfect place for me to pull out my newly acquired Mavic Air drone. Compact and small, this drone is perfect for international travel. As I was now using it in a different country, each time I pulled out the drone on my trip, I had to recalibrate the compass.
Taking flight, I was able to get a full view of the beautiful valley with its deep colors and the windy Rio Irpavi river below.
The Mavic Air Drone captures video in 4K video format and upon returning home I began to work with the film clip. Realizing that my old software of Microsoft Movie Maker wouldn’t be able to handle the new hi-definition 4K video, I ended up getting Cyberlink PowerDirector 16 installed on my computer. Along with that, I needed to update my web browser – Google Chrome to make sure it can handle the new 720p HD format.
Finally I was able to upload a high quality video for you to enjoy. I was able to fly several times during my trip in Bolivia and am looking forward to sharing more of the unique perspectives a drone can give you in my future posts of our adventure.

Impressive video and I love the music; it reminds me of an album by Inti Raymi we used to have, I think it was called Hoja de Coca: very evocative of such beautiful land. I think it would make a good advertisement for Bolivia’s tourism industry: you might want to approach them!
