Spring has been so odd this year. Unseasonably warm temperatures in February led to below freezing temperatures in early March. The huge fluctuation in temperatures taunted the cherry blossoms to begin blooming early, and then they were burnt by the frozen night air.
And so the fears was that the blossoms were ruined for the year. But once again nature persevered and more trees bloomed than expected. I headed down on Saturday morning to offer my photography class. I expected to see mobs of people as it was the first day that the cherry blossoms were in full force and the temperatures had warmed up. But amazingly, due to the dreary forecast, the crowds held off and I walked the basin, having it nearly to myself.
The class went well and it was so enjoyable to watch people learn how to ‘see’ and enjoy the cherry blossoms as well. After they headed out, I pulled out my Canon 5D Mark IV with the 100mm Macro lens and worked on some closeup of the delicate pink pastel flowers.
I always enjoy the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin and I hope that next winter will be easier on them.

I love the photos that you took at night. I don’t often see the blossoms from that perspective.
I wish I had more time to work them, along with a good flashlight for light painting. Well, there is always next year. Thank you.
Glorious captures Emily – what a morning it must have been to seemingly have the place to yourself!
It truly was, a moment before the world wakes up there is a hush all around. Thank you Joanne.
Beautiful!
Thank you Belinda.
Lovely images, Emily!
Thank you so much Ellen.
All beautiful, especially those night shots. We always underestimate the residence of nature.
So well said Stephen. Thank you very much.
Beautiful, Emily. I was there once when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. It is a sight to be treasured. Your pictures are wonderful.
Thrilled you were able to enjoy it at least once in your lifetime. They truly are beautiful and the people are fun to watch. Thank you so much.
