Tucked in a little corner along the bulkhead a Canadian goose couple have decided to set up house.
With Mother Goose sitting on the next, keeping her eggs warm and safe, and Papa Goose close by for protection. Upon approach, he began to hiss, warning for me to stay away.
He did not like the idea of me taking his photograph, and instantly flew right towards me, nearly hitting me with his forceful wings.
Even though I had brought corn for Mother Goose, he was still wary about my presence. She was hungry and quickly ate the corn that she could readily eat.
Approaching a little closer got both of them on alert.
Allowing a good look at her precious treasure under belly, showing five large goose eggs well warmed. Can’t wait to see the little babies!
I did peek into Mama Carolina Wren’s nest and she was tucked well inside, sitting on her eggs as well. Starting to feel like Noah’s Ark around here.

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.

Great photos, Emily. I would have been a bit scared of Mr Goose. π
He is really threatening, no doubt. I went back tonight to leave more corn and he came after me immediately. Oops!
Wow, great shots!!!
Thanks Rexlin!
You’re braver that I am! Also, lucky that you didn’t get bitten, as goose bites are very painful, almost as bad as those delivered by mute swans.
Brave or stupid, one of the two. I was more worried about a whack in the head. I’ll be more careful next time I go down there.
The picture of the angry, jumping father goose is really amazing, Emily, even if I don’t want them to be angry. π
Thanks Bente ! If I wasn’t practically running backward, it might have actually been in focus. LOL !
Great photos!
Canada geese are everywhere here – and they can definitely be aggressive when it comes to defending their little ones. On one of the golf courses we like to play, the geese roam around on a few of the holes, and you have to sometimes exercise extreme caution (not to mention, bend a couple rules of the game) when retrieving a ball that has landed too close to one of them! π
Thank you so much Sheryl. What a funny story, it must be fun trying to play a game around them while they chase you around. Makes me laugh just thinking about it.
WOW – a clutch of eggs and soon babies – that is so cool – geese are very protective too!!! Have a Great Day:)
I hadn’t heard that term in decades. Clutch of eggs, how great is that?
Word of the Day – Clutch – ha! That term just came to me because we had a clutch of quail eggs last Spring.
Your post made me laugh! I remember getting “attacked” by a Canada goose as a child and being so scared of them for so long. They had a nest near the driveway at the barn and guarded it from everyone, even the cars that drove by. They can be pretty scary. Great photo of the male coming toward you!
I would think as a child that would terrorize you for a very long time. It is pretty scary when that big bird comes lunging at you. Thank you so much Tricia.
A “security gander”… π π
Lovely photos, really very well captured… π
HAHA ! Love that Drake ! Security Gander.
What fantastic captures! Hope you are able to show us the babies when they hatch. Until then…be careful of mom and dad!
I totally plan on sharing the brood when they are born. I wonder how long it will take. I’ll watch them in the meantime.
At the farm where I am quite a bit, the geese are setting up house too. There is an island for them that we take a row boat to. One thing about geese, they are not like some other birds that may abandon a nest, but if one repeatedly goes into their territory, they may abandon the eggs. I learned this from my friends who own the farm. Nice photos, especially them protecting he nest.
That’s interesting..glad you told me. We’ll leave them alone, although I was wanting to leave corn for mama goose.
I have never really seen eggs hatch like this, so it will great to watch you photographing it. Great images, I can feel the fear as the daddy came at you.
I can’t wait to see their babies, and hope the parents trust me enough to bring them up to the house for mealtime. In previous years they usually did. All geese in row.
Wow1 Don’t fool around with Mr. Goose when he is protecting a nest! Cool pic though of him coming at you! π―
OMG Phil ! You are so right ! When I went down yesterday to the dock, he attacked me five times.
Good shot and duck from Papa goose. They can be very forceful. Wow, 5 geese coming soon. Them home to Canada.
Somehow I think this family will stay here. I usually have at least one goose family around per year, Which is cute until they get big and leave huge souvenirs on my yard. I then start chasing them off.
