Acadia in Green

For some reason, I never manage to get enough of being out in the woods and feeding the mosquitoes. Actually, I always have bug repellent in my car but when I get out, I just don’t bother to put any on as I keep thinking that I’m impervious to those little biting bugs.

Either way, during my stay on Mount Desert Island in July, I had heard of the Wild Gardens of Acadia and wanted to spend some time browsing the garden and seeing the many native plants showcased here. Arriving, I realized that I was between the spring and late summer bloom season and the best thing to enjoy were the brilliant greens in the forest. These two Green frogs were enjoying the cool spotted shade in their pond.

Nearby is the Jessup trail which leads one through a forest of Birch and Hemlock trees. A well-built walkway seems to go on forever in the green forest. The long boardwalk ends once the Jessup trail crosses over Hemlock Road and opens up to a prairie.

Wanting to really capture the birch trees with their uniqueness, along with ferns proved a little challenging. Not only was I constantly swatting at mosquitoes, the perfect specimen proved to be hard to find. Stepping off the boardwalk, I managed to find a lovely tree with ferns gently caressing the bark.

For once I was smart enough to bring along my tripod which ended up being a necessity due to the low-light conditions in the forest. Lots of photos were taken, but only a few were aesthetically pleasing keepers.

Next time I really need to stop being silly and put some bug spray on. Seems like the mosquitoes keep chasing me out of the woods regardless of what state I’m in. But at least I enjoy the trees within the forest.

  1. Your photos always make me feel that I am in the picture. A friend sent me a quote, just today that goes along with your post.: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.” African Proverb

    • Hi Michael! I had heard of the vanishing point in a photo, but really didn’t know how to achieve it. I just tried to get it, and look at that! Now I know technically all lines are to lead to one point to create the effect.
We should have a frog love fest with FeyGirl ! I bet the Florida frogs are awesome. I’ll be there next week and hope to find some. 🙂 Great seeing you!
