For some reason, I never manage to get enough of being out in the woods and feeding the mosquitoes. Actually, I always have bug repellent in my car but when I get out, I just don’t bother to put any on as I keep thinking that I’m impervious to those little biting bugs.
Either way, during my stay on Mount Desert Island in July, I had heard of the Wild Gardens of Acadia and wanted to spend some time browsing the garden and seeing the many native plants showcased here. Arriving, I realized that I was between the spring and late summer bloom season and the best thing to enjoy were the brilliant greens in the forest. These two Green frogs were enjoying the cool spotted shade in their pond.
Nearby is the Jessup trail which leads one through a forest of Birch and Hemlock trees. A well-built walkway seems to go on forever in the green forest. The long boardwalk ends once the Jessup trail crosses over Hemlock Road and opens up to a prairie.
Wanting to really capture the birch trees with their uniqueness, along with ferns proved a little challenging. Not only was I constantly swatting at mosquitoes, the perfect specimen proved to be hard to find. Stepping off the boardwalk, I managed to find a lovely tree with ferns gently caressing the bark.
For once I was smart enough to bring along my tripod which ended up being a necessity due to the low-light conditions in the forest. Lots of photos were taken, but only a few were aesthetically pleasing keepers.
Next time I really need to stop being silly and put some bug spray on. Seems like the mosquitoes keep chasing me out of the woods regardless of what state I’m in. But at least I enjoy the trees within the forest.

Gorgeous shots!
Thank you so much Kathryn, and welcome to my blog. I appreciate your follow. Bella
No problem, i look forward to seeing more!
Just beautiful… And those frogs! Lovessss!
I think we need to make our own frog gallery.
TOTALLY. In my queue RIGHT NOW, as we speak, I have an image of my friend’s…from Puerto Rico…their NATIONAL FROG! Arrrrgh!
Is it ok to have frog envy?
Oh totally. I squeal when I see a tree frog climbing up the house, as if it’s some newly-discovered species…
Now that’s something I’d like to see – not the frog..but you squealing ! LOL
A VERY common occurrence on any given day / hike! You’d think I’d never have seen an alligator…frog…bird…turtle…tree… Hah! Fifth decade on this planet and I’m continually surprised. 🙂
But that’s the best part of life ! Always discovering and rediscovering.
beautiful photos. Be careful of those pesky mosquitoes!
Thanks Holly ! I really need to as West Nile Virus has been found near Baltimore and a few have died from it. 😦 Who knew that photography could be a dangerous sport?
Your photos always make me feel that I am in the picture. A friend sent me a quote, just today that goes along with your post.: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.” African Proverb
HAHAHA !! That is awesome !! I’ll never forget that quote!
Thank you so much for your kind and perceptive words. Means a lot to me that these photos can set you in the place that I’m showing.
Very very nice .what camera are u useing??
This is my Canon 7D with 24-105mm L IS USM lens. Wonderful set up!
Last year was the 60D with the 18-200mm kit lens. found my photos were always soft.
I also made sure I’m using the tripod a lot more which makes a huge difference in my photos. I’m also shooting RAW and getting better at post processing in Lightroom v3.6
So you are a professional photograph ?
I wish ! Nope, just an avid enthusiast. Trying to become a travel writer/photographer though.
Love the forest and the landscape, beautiful photos!
Thank you so much Vibeke ! So happy you enjoyed these.
Great shots, the last one is just so great… 😉
Thank you so much Drake!
I love birches.
Hi there ! Great to see you here ! I love them too, and somehow thought this birch forest would be more impressive. They were mostly young trees, but still wonderful. Thanks for stopping by!
Love the greens, great shots!
Let’s see if I remember this right…Judy?? Hope I correct. Thank you so much ! I’ll be baking on Saturday morning and thinking of you!
Yes, Judy is correct. Have a wonderful baking day on Saturday!!
Woo Hoo! So the little grey cells still work a bit.
Beautiful photos Bella! I love how that boardwalk looks like it goes on forever! Frogs are really cool. I seem to have an unusual abundance of them this year. They are everywhere!
Hi Michael! I had heard of the vanishing point in a photo, but really didn’t know how to achieve it. I just tried to get it, and look at that! Now I know technically all lines are to lead to one point to create the effect.
We should have a frog love fest with FeyGirl ! I bet the Florida frogs are awesome. I’ll be there next week and hope to find some. 🙂 Great seeing you!
Beautiful Photos – Heart the Color Green so maybe a little bias:)
This set is my favorite of the series. I spent more time thinking of the photo shoot, regardless of the mosquitoes trying to chase me out of the woods. 🙂
