With a saddened heart I had to say goodbye to a Noble Beast today.
Javalin who was large as life in both size and heart has been suffering for sometime now due to a suppressed immune system. A year has past and I watched him slowly weaken and become a shadow of himself.
We’ve grown so much together Javalin and I. We’ve overcome fears and learned how to trust each other and become partners. He adored his cookies and his catered lunches that I would bring to him. Nickering when he saw me walk out of the barn, he always brought a smile to my face.
And Javalin loved the girls, boy did he love the girls. There were several I could never let him near as he would get all excited and say hello to them in his sexy baritone horsey voice.
I remember him getting out of stall once and running immediately over to the paddock of a lady horse he was particularly fond of. Not happy that the fence was in between them, he turned around and kicked down the top rail. By then I had reached him and told him to stop. Such a good boy he was, he dropped his head as if to say “Okay..I’ll be a good boy.”
One of our favorite things to do was run around in a paddock together. Him wild and free..me acting like a wild and crazy woman. In fact, just about a week ago I brought him into the arena and let him loose. He immediately knew what that meant and kicked up his heels and ran off in glee.
He did a few silly things and be embarrassed about it. Like the time he sat on the corner of the fence and it fell down underneath him. He ran away with a shamed look on his face. Or the time that he ran right into a white ground pole that was sticking up because he wasn’t looking where he was going. He was funny when he wanted to be.
Javalin had such a kind spirit without a mean bone in his body. He was so frightened of the world and of people because of how he was treated by humans for 15 years before me. It took years for him to finally trust me and relax and enjoy the world. I’d like to believe that the last part of his life was heaven on earth for him. He was greatly loved and gently handled with much patience and understanding.
We can all benefit from the lessons that Javalin has taught us. Of kindness and love with a passion for life. We will miss you Javalin.

Emily – please, accept my utmost hugs and love for his passing. Those of us who are lucky enough to share these amazing beings in our lives know what kind of hole it leaves when they pass. We lost our spunky girl Revvy last Fall, but I do believe she’s never that far (and able to be wild and free!!), and I’m sure the same is true of your beautiful and sweet Javalin.
