On Google +, there are several photography groups that I follow. One of them being Nature Visions Photo Expo. A wonderful place that shows some creative nature photography. One of the recurring themes I’ve been seeing is blurring nature to create an impressionist image.
After today’s rain, I took my Canon G12 out to experiment with the spring flowers to see what I could come up with. Creative blurs, I quickly found out is more difficult than I thought it would be. First, allow me to show you my subjects.
Setting the camera on TV (Time Value/Shutter Priority) I first used the shutter speed of 1/15 of a second.
Nope..that’s not it. Let’s slow down the shutter speed some more. This time a 1/.6 of a second.
Oh no ! Too much light ! Let’s find something in between at 1/8 of a second.
That’s more like it ! I discovered that having color and contrast really makes the blur images work. I also had to practice the speed and angle that I moved the camera while pressing down the shutter.
I think to come up with something perfectly fascinating and worthy of Picasso some practice may need to be done. Although I like this last one of some random grass. Let me know what you think! Happy Spring everyone. π
Oh ! I’m going to add one more. This one I think is the best one. I caught it when cleaning out the extra files.

Very creative!!!
Thank you so much. Don’t you just love spring?
They are actually all good. And you are right, the last one looks like Laburnums. I wouldn’t know the difference on the speed and I like what I see. Keep on practising.
Haha ! You are funny Perpetua. Bet you can learn though. Shutter speed is how fast the lens opens and closes to take the image. You can either stop motion or make it silky.
That sounds purely physics. I am totally clueless (still) with the digital camera I still have yet to learn. π
Oh…I do like these blurs! And after a rain…remarkable.
The rain has been really fun. The woods are so vibrantly green!
Cool! I shot wet flowers today too. Will try some of your blurred ones tomorrow since it is supposed to stay gray. Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh ! I can’t wait to see your flowers..heading over now. Always trying to think of something creative to keep the mind fresh.
I like these, they work! very creative…well done!
You are too kind. Thank you so much!
Very creative, and cool shots!!
Thank you very much Calee.
oh that’s very beautiful and creative!! i really like them all, but the green ones are my favourites π
Wonderful to hear which ones you prefer Evi. I like the green ones too.
They are great shots and something different! I did something similiar with my blurred banana image!
Now that is a funny idea – a blurred banana. Now that is creative!
Looks like you’re having fun!
What can I say..doesn’t take much to entertain me. π
i see like this all the time !
nice captures , i like shooting with a slow shutter speed for motion effects with horses and waves , but rarely with flowers
I love your horse blur images. They are so beautiful. I have no idea why I haven’t tried it with the ponies. Most of the time when I’m at the barn, they’re just quietly grazing. Sigh…
Very well done, very creative… π
Thank you so much sweet Drake.
These are beautiful!
So nicely done.
That means so much from a wonderful photographer that you are. Thank you Lisa!
Fascinating!
So happy you enjoyed them Fatima.
Wow, Emily this process is very cool and my artist curiosity. Once you found the right process, I love the result of your second shot of green stems – spot on w/the value ranges, it absolutely works and draws out great interest.
I love how you can look at these images and can see how the color and movement works and doesn’t work. I wish you were with me to coach me through these scenes to really make something fabulous. Thanks Mary!
You are INSPIRING me to go on a CREATIVE STREAK – Loving your captures!!! Happy Tuesday:)
Oh you should Renee ! It’s too easy to get stuck in a rut. Life is to be experienced and experimented with. π Shake things up a bit.
Love it! Such fun experiments…..
Thank you my dear. Amazing what one comes up with when one is bored. π
This is so great ! I love this ! I really love the second and fourth one to last. I’ve never tried this, but I’m sure it must takes some practice. Very well done Emily !
I just tried it a few times. Glad I understood about shutter speeds. I’ve seem some really fantastic blurs though. Appreciate your very kind comment.
What an interesting process, I love how there are so many things you can do with photography. I have looked a little at the photography groups on google+ but haven’t really joined any, I don’t use it enough, but I might have to start looking more. You have inspired me.
It’s fun in the sense that you can share your images without lots of commentary. There are some huge groups in there. Social media can sure be a time killer though. π
Yes, that’s for sure, I’ve been staying away from it a bit, I need to concentrate on some other stuff now, but I should take more of an interest.
I like the last and the 6th a lot, I can tell what they are and and they are still abstract. That works for us engineering types.
