The trails on Mount Desert Island in and out of Acadia National Park are absolutely outstanding. With a wide variety of terrain and scenery ranging from mountains to the sea, these trails offer endless hiking opportunities.
As my dear husband is not a hiker, I have to sneak out now and again to get my feet on a trail. Luckily, just across a small bridge next to where we are staying is the trail head of this little known, but charming trail. The Little Harbor Brook Trail begins at Route 3 and heads north and crosses the Antiscou Trail.
But this outing was primarily a photo field trip into the woods that Hobbits could live in.
Entering into the cool green forest, the moss covered pathways decorated with ferns and scented with Balsam Fir trees lead me away from the ocean. The bell from the buoy could still be heard in the background as forest birds sang along.
Quickly I realized these trails are different than the ones in Maryland. With their root filled pathways, one needs to be careful not to trip.
The trail meanders along the babbling Little Harbor Brook.
This walk was in Mother Nature’s finest. The woods are charmingly decorated with ferns reaching towards the cool water.
And intriguing knotted tree roots that were surely created due to some significant event.
Leaves floated while water spiders danced by.
The lunch spot for a Red Squirrel along the stream. He must have run off way before I got there.
For the first time I decided to use my iPhone exclusively for my GPS and trail tracking. Using the Everytrail application, it was easy to locate my position and start recording my track. Enjoying all of the photo opportunities, I wandered into the forest and snapped away. After a while, I decided to figure out just where the trail was taking me. Around the 1 1/2 mile mark, I pulled out my iPhone and discovered that the woods had blocked the phone signal. I had no service !
So what was I to do? I was having so much fun being out on the trail and was wanting to continue. But since I neglected to bring a hard copy of the trail, I had to do the sensible thing and turn back to head home. Next time I’m going to bring my trusty Delorme PN-40, as well as a paper copy of the trail map.
But this gave me a chance to start capturing some of the wild flowers of Acadia on my way back. Come back soon to catch some blossoms!
Happy Trails!

Absolutely beautiful!! What a gorgeous trail… ♥ We’ve tried the GPS/phone method as well, but service usually drops fairly quickly. Hard copy! (This learned after one unfortunate incident, incorrect trail markings, nightfall, car miles away…)
Very nice. What a wonderful place. I love those roots in the trail.
Pretty! Let’s get back to hiking MD when you return (-;
Plan on it!
Very nice photos from this wonderful trail. Maybe I should try to lears my phones gps too, before I need it…
I was really looking forward to taking advantage of the Everytrail application. Already the cell phone service on the island is sketchy, so that may be my only problem here.
