Paris, the town of romance and excitement, the city of lights. While wandering along the Seine River towards Notre Dame, the scent of fresh-baked bread filled the air. It was a leisurely Sunday morning in May and unknown to us, the annual Bread Festival or “Pain Fete” was being held on the grounds of Notre Dame.
Wonderful, delicious and aromatic bread. The staff of life, filled with incredible things like chocolate, and even better brie! This is a bread-lover’s heaven – luscious perfectly baked Parisian bread. Life doesn’t get any better than this.
The Notre Dame courtyard was filled with morning visitors, all entranced by the scent of baked goods.
Within the large tent, bakers busied themselves with keeping up with the demand of festival bread eaters.
But this isn’t just any festival, this is the Grand Prix of competitions among the bread makers in Paris. Of the 1,200 Boulangeries in Paris, 174 bakers participated in this Baguette baking contest. Required to bake these baguettes on the premises according to traditional baking techniques and only using the four ingredients of wheat flour, yeast, water and salt, these bakers hope to win the show.
These bakers show that creating a perfect baked good is truly an art. Using dough as a canvas, creative works of bread art and delectable goods were displayed in the show room.
Alas, the french sign that said “Do not touch” deterred me from grabbing a goodie from the table and running off with it. However, this spectacular bread sculpture commanded reverence.
For a bread addict like myself, there couldn’t have been a better place to spend a lovely Sunday morning in Paris.
