Singer’s Island Castle

In a country that is so young, it’s hard to imagine that the United States could be filled with castles. There was a time in the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s where opportunity was boundless and many were able to fulfill their American dream.

The construction of these castles provided expansive job opportunities for laborers and artisans alike. In the Thousand Island region on the Saint Lawrence Seaway the islands saw extravagant homes and even castles being built. Singer Castle on Dark Island is the only castle that was completed and lived in during that time period.

Built by the self-made millionaire, Mr. Frederick Gilbert Bourne, as a surprise for his family in the years of 1902 to 1904. This island “hunting’ retreat included the 4-story, 28-room castle, a 4-story Tower, and three boat houses, a workshop and powerhouse. Elaborately built with hidden secret passageways, and underground tunnels the castle was designed by American architect Ernest Flagg that designed the Castle after inspiration from Sir Walter Scott’s novel about Woodstock Castle (1832) in Scotland. At a young age, Frederick Bourne began working at the Clark O.N.T. (Our New Thread) Company and was introduced to the Singer family. Starting at the bottom, he quickly worked his way to the top of the Singer Sewing Machine Company and became the Director and President by the young age of 36.

The castle, originally called “The Towers” was host to many well-known members of the elites, including the Vanderbilts. Designed and decorated inside with the trappings of a true medieval castle, Singer Castle is a marvel both inside and out.

One can only imagine the lifestyle, fun and games these American elite had at the turn of the 20th century. Such elegance and entertainment held on the grounds of the castles throughout America. How I wish I could take a time machine back with a change in wardrobe. What it would be to live in the world of Great Gatsby….

But wait…you can ! Not only is the castle available for rental for special events, you can also stay in a master suite overnight, including full service and a catered dinner. For more visitor information:

  1. Had the beautiful little castle just been a little closer to the water – so one could had have jumped out of the bed in the tower room – and then jumped out the window, down into the water – what a way to take morning bath – so there should have been a closet with a sath sheet ready down there – so no one would discover that the ‘crazy black duck’ were naked – except the seagulls… ‘hahaha’

  2. I’d love to explore a castle such as this. Especially the secret passageways and underground tunnels. Can you imagine what hide and seek games would be like in a place like this. 😉 It would still be fun today. Great writeup.

    • It would really be a blast in this castle. There are secret passageways all throughout the house with secret panels in the walls so that you can spy on your guests!
      Thanks for enjoying the post.
