Rosaryville State Park Side Trails: 11 Miles/Moderate

Rosaryville State Park is a 982 acre day-use park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Location of the historic Mount Airy Mansion, this 11 mile circuit hike snakes through a series of unmarked trails. The terrain is fairly straight forward with undulating hills throughout. This is a multi-use park with hikers, bikers and equestrians on the trail. On this circuit, expect bushwacking and stream crossings. Total elevation gain is 1,319 feet.

COMMENTARY: This is one my favored locations for hiking due to its easy access and variety of terrain. Offering woods and fields, Rosaryville State Park also has picnic facilities on site. The Perimeter trail takes you by the historic Mount Airy Mansion which timed right is a perfect lunch spot on the 10-mile perimeter circuit trail. The undulating hills provide a great workout without overexertion.

Photos shown are from several hikes in recent years at Rosaryville State Park.

The Mount Airy Mansion was the 17th century hunting lodge of Lord Baltimore, and is available for rental for special events. The original building was burnt down in 1752 and Benedict Swingate Calvert began construction of the current estate. George Washington’s adopted son John Park Custis held his wedding in 1774 at Mount Airy with George Washington in attendance.

are seen throughout the trails and fields.

Along the road that leads towards the open fields

and picnic pavilion several old abandoned barns

stand from times past.
