The Great American Eclipse was the biggest event this summer and perhaps for the past decade except for last year’s Supermoon. Traveling across the country from Oregon to Georgia throughout the day, millions of Americans traveled or stepped outside to witness the joining of the Sun and Moon.
You would think that as much as a planner I am I would have had everything figured out way in advance when it came to Eclipse day. But somehow this time I didn’t. I hadn’t planned on photographing it as there will be millions of much better images than mine, but as the day drew closer I just couldn’t help myself.
Scrambling about ten days out I was able to get my hands on a Lee Solar Eclipse 100 x 100 filter for my NiSi filter mount system and researched camera settings to photograph the event. 1/500 sec, f/8, ISO 800, AWB and bracketed.
The only thing I was missing was a pair of Eclipse glasses. Sold out everywhere, I went in the morning and waited hours in the hot humid Washington D.C. summer day at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum to get my hands on a pair.
In Maryland, we experienced about an 80% sun coverage by the sun, giving us a quarter moon type appearance to the sun. It was fascinating and glorious and the skies were truly incredible. I managed to see most of it before the white fluffy clouds overtook the scene.
So from the dark we have been brought back into the light.

How very lucky you were to get to enjoy such a beautiful natural phenomenon! We had a total eclipse last year in the south of England, but as usual, it was cloudy and only glimpsed it for a couple of seconds. Pity, as Headmaster had arranged for the whole school to go outside in the playfields to enjoy it!
Beautiful! I wish I’d known you needed glasses I would have given you some. I had extra’s so I gave a couple families some at Sandy Point where my grandson & I went.
I should have done a post, another friend had a pair too. Although I must admit, I had fun participating in the crowd even if it was super hot. Thanks Laurie.
I’m glad you got them & had fun. YW
