The first person that can correctly name each and every one of the following Birds of Prey will receive an 8 x 10 print of the bird of their choice. Here it goes!
AND WE HAVE A WINNER ! Quiet Solo Pursuits named all of these birds of prey accurately. They are:
Peregrine Falcon, Barred Owl, American Kestrel, Golden Eagle, Red Tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, and a Turkey Vulture.
Thank you so much for participating in this guessing game.
These images were taken this morning at Soldier’s Delight Environmental Area during the Birds of Prey photography workshop.

I’ll give it a try: Peregrine, Barred Owl, Kestrel, Golden Eagle, this is a guess Red Tail Hawk, Screech Owl, and Turkey Buzzard/Volture.
Very very close. Try again.
Give me a hint, which one I didn’t get right. Ugh
You’d have the hawk right. No one else is trying so don’t give up! I have much better ‘natural’ shots of these birds you can chose from.
Okay, so somebody won with the same raptors I named. But what order did I lose?
If it’s not a hawk, second guess is a Falcon.
You have the Red Tail Hawk correct. It is the second owl which is a Great Horned Owl and not a Screech Owl. Next time!
Whooo? says the owl.
🙂
Ok..so would you be interested in having a print anyway? Be more than happy to share with you trying your hardest to get this.
That was fun, even though I don’t win a prize. It’s good enough I see your post. Thanks, Emily.
Peregrine Falcon, Barred Owl, American Kestrel, Golden eagle, Red Tail Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Turkey Vulture? Great shots, but that’s cheating! 🙂
But of course you’d come through with the winning list. Congrats Jerry!
Hi Jerry..send me an email and we can discuss your winning photo. bellaremyphoto@aol.com
Shhh, I was going to say let the second correct person have the print, but as I started typing, I realized that wouldn’t work. You may delete my comment and keep the contest going if you like.
We should just go ahead and give a best second guess award to Seeker. She really tried.
Fine by me
🙂 Offer extended.
Barred Owl and Great Horned Owl… 🙂
You got your owls right Drake!
In the order you posted these, they are:
Henry, Abel, Little Tony, Flying Bertha, Bill Flockmeister, and Pinky Bruhaha.
This is awesome Mike!
🙂
Oh, and I left out Jumping Johnny who is #4.
Since I can not accurately ID these amazing birds 100% I was going to answer as Mike just did.
He beat me to it. Although I thought the pic of #2, the owl looked more like a Gloria. 😕 🙂
You guys are really too much. I though you would know these for certain Phil! Guess you don’t see them on the marsh too much.
I had the golden eagle right, and the great horned owl, but had no clue on that falcon? and the one you guys are calling American kestrel doesn’t look anything like what they call kestrels here in cen. tx. Oh, and I had the black vulture right, too. Fun stuff, pretty birds!
I believe that’s right. That your Texas Kestrel is quite different. Thrilled that you are here and enjoyed this post.
I love your blog!
Thank you so much! You are too kind.
Late to the party but enjoyed the challenge and comments! Great idea Emily!
i can photograph them-name many of them — but the kestrel threw me as did the barred owl
very fine images
I am so thrilled with the day and have 1300 images. It’ll be hard to wean down as many of them are great. A really fun day.
I couldn’t, some are too exotic for me. Nice series, Emily.
So happy I could share these special beauties with you Bente.
Great Photos! Sorry I missed this event!
I am too Nels. They’re going to do it again in the fall. Its through Capital Photography Center and Baltimore Photo Safari. I missed the barn owl in the barn because the Turkey Vulture escaped twice. So I want to go back!
Can you send me info on the fall event? Thanks!! Great peregrine falcon, they are my son’s favorite…
From what I can tell, the date hasn’t been set yet. I just went through their website and nothing. We’ll just have to keep checking. I think they also plan on sending an email to today’s participants.
The fall event will be on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Soldier’s Delight Natural Area.

Maybe I’ll see you there!
Thank you!
These are gorgeous!!
Thank you so much Linda. I was so thrilled to be so close to these beauties.
Photography of birds is so challenging and you do an amazing job in capturing both the detail and color. Love your work.
You are so very kind Charlie and thank you so much. Practice practice practice. That’s what I’ve been doing for almost two years. Amazing how I can take thousands of photos, but can only show you ten of them. LOL !
Wonderful photos, Emily. Well done to your winner. What a great prize to win. 🙂
Thank you so much Sylvia. What can I say..Jerry had the bird in the bag. 🙂
My husband is a very keen bird watcher and these are his answers:
1. Peregrine Falcon
2. Tawny Owl
3. Hobby
4. Golden Eagle
5. Buzzard
6. Long eared/Eagle Owl
7. Black Vulture
Funny, when I first met him, he used to get his bird books out, open a page, point to a picture of a bird and I had to guess what it was. So we’ve loved doing this with you: just like the old days! 🙂
Your husband is indeed very close. The full list is on the top. The ones that he missed are
#2, 3, and 5.
Barred Owl, American Kestrel and Red-Tailed Hawk. Helps if you have these birds in your area. 🙂
Such GORGEOUS raptors…Those colors!
You would have such a ball doing this photo shoot ! It was amazing ! Next one is this October. Humm..maybe a fall trip up north is in order?
ALWAYS!!! I always visit that way for mom’s birthday, which is great that she chose to be born in such a beautiful time of the year. 🙂
No idea, but I love the pictures!! Especially the own with furry ears! Great 😀
Must admit the “Long-Eared Owl” is my favorite as well. Did you see his furry feet too? And those big yellow eyes..Amazing. Thanks Calee.
Emily and Jerry thank you for your kind consideration. I did try very hard and guess “Who” I missed. The Long Eared/Horned Owl and it’s pretty obvious. Duh! Okay then, I chose Long Eared/Horned Owl so that I will never ever forget the “Who”. I will be in touch, again. Thank you both.
Awesome..the Long Eared Owl it is then. I have a fantastic shot of his bright yellow eyes and head staring right at you. I need your mailing address ok? Email it to me – bellaremyphoto@aol.com
Really nice photos. I see they all were named correctly so no need here.
Awww..I should have left it off so you could play too. Sorry you missed it. Next time!
