You know that Rolling Stones song? “You Can’t Always Get What You Want…But if you try sometimes, you’ll find…..you get what you need?”
Well, the last couple of birding expeditions I’ve gone on this past week, this song rings true. I go out with visions of what I will find and what their photographs will look like.
Seems the ducks and swans have different ideas. It’s as if they know I’m coming to take their photo and decide to not cooperate. Today, I went out to find a Wood Duck, but instead came home with these little beauties. Even though I didn’t get what I wanted, I certainly am happy with what I found.

Lovely, lovely, lovely! Nature and peace – that’s what I need and I found it here!
You’re welcome to come and visit any time Rebecca. Always here for a respite.
Beautiful birds, very well captured… 🙂
The first condition of success with something – it’s to trying… 😉
All good things come to those that wait right Drake?
Great photos!!!! thanks for sharing.
Thanks Sally ! These were great finds.
They’re beautiful.
Nature is truly amazing. Now if I could capture that Wood Duck. Talk about color and design!
Wow, these are brilliant. I love them all, but the picture Canvas Back Duck is remarkable. I love the water drops and red eyes!! Gorgeous 🙂
Thanks Judy! Isn’t that amazing that these birds have red eyes. I wonder why that is. And to think, 60 days ago I never knew these birds existed!
I love the way you captured the drops of water coming down from the beak of the duck and how the water ripples as it paddles underneath. A photo that speaks.
Thank you so much for such a fantastic comment ! I loved that duck and how expressive he was. Have a great weekend.
Really nice shots. Appreciation of what we get is one of the greatest lessons of photography. 🙂
I’m starting to learn it, even though I still pout when I don’t get what I want. 🙂
Excellent photos! Wood ducks are tough for me, I don’t have a single shot of them in the open without at least one branch or weed in the way. I wish you success!
Thanks Jerry ! Got to start with finding one first.
Lovely photographs, Emily, and you are right, when we hold too firmly to preconceived ideas we miss out on alot of joy along the way. Happy St Davids Day from Wales. We are going off to the Parade and taking my camera with me to capture who knows what!!
Hi Corinne ! have never heard of St. Davids Day. What is that? I can’t wait to see what you have captured from the day. 🙂
Great shots, Emily. I especially like the water dripping from the duck’s beak. Too bad it wasn’t rolling off its back 🙂
LOL ! Thanks Tom !
You can almost feel the soft feather of the purple sandpiper
He was the cutest thing and I was so lucky to have seen him. Thanks Fatima.
Excellent – you captured these lovelies. Great eye and timing on these photographs, wonderful!
Timing..it’s all about timing for a photographer. Right place at the right time.
Any bird is a good subject, and I love your Canvas Back. Looks like he was cooperative.
This group are very cooperative as the owners of the home feed them along with the Tundra Swans. They came swimming up in hopes of some goodies.
Great captures!!!! I can hardly WAIT until spring to get out so I can get out and try the bird photo lottery. I know exactly what you mean. I have spent hours driving, walking, hunting for them, click the shutter a few hundred times and then…find three or four worth keeping – truly a labor of love isn’t it? 🙂
Bird Lottery ! Love that Maya ! It is so very true. Labor of love or being just being bird crazy. It’s one of those. Can’t wait to hear what you find this spring.
Wonderful bird pictures!! I’ve never seen any of these birds in real life, so I really enjoy watching your photos. Have a great weekend, Emily!!
Thanks Calee! I never even heard of these birds until I saw them for the first time. So happy to share them with you. It’s always a treasure hunt. Have a great weekend too.
Beautiful Captures – Happy Friday:)
Thanks Renee!
I would be happy too Emily. Especially like that canvas back!
I love that photo as well Phil. Hope you make it to the marsh this weekend.
What beauties!!
Aren’t they cool? I love water birds.
Amazing photos. I am more of a Beatles fan and never got into the Rolling Stones, but your point is well taken…
Haha ! That is funny Charlie, but it is a great song with a super message. Thank you so much for your kind compliment.
