From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a horse”. Or,” that’s a lot of money for just a horse.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a horse.” Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a horse,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a horse” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it’s “just a horse,” then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a horse” just smile, because they “just” don’t understand. Today I helped a friend take her sweet horse Hannah to the Emergency Vet. She has had Hannah for 30 years, and Hannah has always been a warm, and kind teacher to countless children and smaller adults throughout her life. Hannah went to the vet cheerfully, but when she got there, she finally showed that she wasn’t feeling well. Hopefully Hannah will make it, but with her age who knows what the outcome will be.
These majestic animals, such as Hannah have so much grace, courage, and strength to share and teach us. It is our job to be willing to listen, learn, and encompass those attributes to our lives.
